James Reid Green (1948-)
James Green is a longtime Zen student and former monk who is a disciple of the renowned Japanese Zen master and artist Keido Fukushima Roshi. He is the translator of The Recorded Sayings of Zen Master Joshu & The Sayings of Layman P'ang.
While an undergraduate at the University of California, Santa Barbara, James Green was a protégé of Professor Mokusen Miyuki and studied Classical Chinese with Professor Chauncey Goodrich. He graduated with a BA in Eastern philosophy in 1970.
After graduating, he studied with Joshu Sasaki Roshi as a resident monk at Mt. Baldy Zen Center in California from 1970 to 1973. Subsequently, Green went to Japan to further his Zen study, where he studied Zen with Kosho Uchiyama Roshi at Antai-ji temple in Kyoto for a brief period before eventually becoming a resident monk at Hofuku-ji monastery in Okayama prefecture as a disciple of Keido Fukushima Roshi. During this period, he was tutored in translating Zen texts from Classical Chinese.
Though leaving formal monastic practice in late 1976, Green frequently returned to Japan to continue his studies with Fukushima Roshi until Fukushima Roshi passed away in 2010. Having lived in Southeast Asia since the mid-'90s, Green currently resides in Saigon, Vietnam.
