Abstract
Zhimen Guangzuo 智門光祚 (ca. 950-1030) of the Yunmen 雲門 School, active from the late Five Dynasties to the early Song, was the teacher of the famous Song Chan master Xuedou Chongxian 雪竇重顯 (980-1053). Overshadowed by the fame of Yunmen Wenyan 雲門文偃 (864-949) and Xuedou Chongxian, Guangzuo is usually mentioned only briefly in the history of Chan Buddhism. Guangzuo, however, serves as a necessary link for the transmission of the Yunmen School between Yunmen and Xuedou. This article first makes a detailed comparison of several biographical sources in order to characterize Guangzuo's life and teaching career. Next, the compilation, publication and structure of the Record of Sayings of Chan Master Zhimen Zuo (Zhimen zuo chanshi yulu 智門祚禪師語錄) are systematically analyzed. Finally, the author examines three pieces of information from the section of “Ascending the Dharma Hall” (shangtang 上堂) in his Record of Sayings to discuss Guangzuo's Chan thought. This article on Zhimen Guangzuo's life and Record of Sayings contributes to the field of the study of Chan Buddhism not only by providing important information for analyzing the development of Chan Buddhism from the Tang dynasty to the Song dynasty, but also by serving a basis for the studies of Chan texts and genres of the Song dynasty.

 

 

ZHIMEN GUANGZUO

ZHIMEN GUANGZUO (d. 1031) was a disciple of Xianglin Chengyuan. His home was in Zhejiang Province. He traveled to Yizhou (near modern Chengdu City) where he studied under Xianglin Chengyuan. After receiving the mind-seal from Xianglin he first taught at Shuangchuan in Suizhou. Later, he moved to Zhimen Temple, from which he derived his mountain name.

 

A monk asked Zen master Zhimen, “What is Buddha?”

Zhimen said, “When the straw sandals are worn out, continue barefoot.”

The monk asked, “What is the affair that is beyond Buddha?”

Zhimen said, “The tip of the staff upholds the sun and moon.”

 

A monk asked, “What is the meaning of the First Ancestor’s coming from the west?”

Zhimen said, “The eyes can’t see the nose.”

The person then asked, “What is it when one understands in this manner?”

Zhimen said, “Smelling your nose.”

 

Zhimen entered the hall and addressed the monks, saying, “If there is one Dharma, then Vairochana becomes a commoner. If the ten thousand dharmas are lacking, then Samantabhadra loses his realm. Just when it is like this, Manjushri has nowhere to show his head, and if he can’t show his head, then the golden-haired lion is cut in two. If you enjoy a bowl of food, don’t eat the spicy meat cakes.”

 

A monk asked, “What is the pure dharmakaya?”

Zhimen said, “The entire eye is dust.”

 

A monk asked, “What is it before the ancient mirror is polished?”

Zhimen said, “It’s just a piece of copper.”

The monk then asked, “What about after it is polished?”

Zhimen said, “Then you can take it.”

 

A monk asked, “What is perceived by the pupil of the diamond-eye?”

Zhimen said, “A handful of sand.”

The monk then asked, “Why is it like that?”

Zhimen said, “It’s not a noble realm.”

 

Zen master Zhimen entered the hall and addressed the monks, saying, “All of you put your staffs over your shoulder and go traveling, leaving one monastery and traveling to the next. How many different types of monasteries do you say there are? It’s either a sandalwood monastery surrounded by sandalwood, or it’s a thistle monastery surrounded by thistles. Or it could be a thistle monastery surrounded by sandalwood, or a sandalwood monastery surrounded by thistles. Of these four types of monasteries, in which type is each of you willing to spend your life? If you don’t find a place to pass your life securely then you’re just wearing out your sandals for no reason, and eventually the day will come when the King of Hell will take away all of your sandal money!”
