朝比奈宗源 Asahina Sōgen (1891-1979)
Sogen Asahina (1891—1979; Asahina Sogen) was a Japanese Rinzai Zen master and Chief Abbot of Engakuji in Kamakura, Japan. Asahina-roshi trained a good many Westerners in the Rinzai way, despite not knowing any English. During American occupation of Japan in World War II Asahina-roshi had numerous Western visitors and, at war's end, even traveled to North America sanctioning teachers and priests whom he apparently had very little contact with (such as Kongo Richard Langlois). Engakuji had been open to Westerners before Asahina had ever assumed leadership, as it is the temple of the late Soen Shaku. One of Asahina-roshi's better known students was Yamada Koun, who went on to train with other masters. Considered to hold ultra-nationalist views, in 1974 Asahina-roshi founded the far right Association to Protect Japan. This group sought to rid Japan of what it viewed as biased education and to promote Japanese patriotism.
