Painting and inscription by Reitan.

This was likely brushed for one of Reitan's friends or a disciple who was a musician; it is a rare subject for Zen art. The inscription is nicely and rhythmically integrated with the painting.

Reitan became a monk at age 10, and studied under a number of masters. He served as abbot of Kosho-ji in Uji City, one of the main temples of the Soto Zen school. Reitan has many disciples, including Dainin, the master of the famous Zen poet Ryokan.
