John H. Crook (1930-2011)

Dr. John Hurrell Crook

 

Dr. John Hurrell Crook (November 27, 1930—July 15, 2011) was founder of the Western Chan Fellowship of Europe and was the first Western Dharma heir of the late Master Sheng Yen of the Chinese Chan tradition. Before studying with Master Sheng Yen, he had done retreats with Lama Akong at Samye Ling in Scotland and with Houn Jiyu-Kennett-roshi at Throssel Hole Priory. He is the author of several books, both on Buddhism and sociology. Crook is also remembered as a distinguished ethologist, serving as Reader in Ethology at the Department of Psychology of the University of Bristol in the 1970s and 1980s.
